The film, which many consider to be the greatest surf/spy/extreme sports/cop drama of all time will be screened in its entirety with an ongoing interplay between the audio from the film and the band’s live performance. Great White Caps, armed with scripts and an assortment of cues, will be bringing the audio and dialogue of the film out to the forefront to preserve the storyline, before jamming alongside its memorable sequences. It is a well rehearsed production that has yielded not only a new and unique way to experience a movie you love, but a band as well.

At these special screenings which have been performed all over the East Coast, the key is just simply having fun. They strongly encourage audience participation and the crowd are asked to yell at the screen and recite their favorite dialogue. At the end of the day these performances are happening because they love the movie so much, as band member Montag the Magnificent said, “This was a labor of love, because since my first VHS copy of this movie, to the many hung over Saturdays catching it on TV,to now having rehearsed and performed in front of this movie well over a hundred times, it never stops being fun. It’s as simple as that.”

Well, as the weighty haze of chilly mornings and frigid nights starts to slowly lift itself from my life I find myself daydreaming of warm air and the smell of fresh grass (multiple types of both). I can’t think of a better way to celebrate this coming of rebirth than jumping into our trusty white steed, Chuck Truckle, and pointing his nose south. What lies ahead is surely hell fire and brimstone all wrapped up in a sunny little package we disguise as sweet and innocent surf rock. But bubbling beneath the surface, just as it was in 1961, is the reality of sweaty flesh and bad intentions all in pure and unadulterated good fun. Evidence of this was just caught this past weekend when we decided to try and do something wholesome and dignified by strapping on some acoustic guitars and inviting a select group of our friends to join us for a party and intimate performance in the vein of The Beach Boys “Party” album. It wasn’t long before it devolved into a heady mix of dog humping, shouting and rowdy as hell renditions of both The Cramps “Let’s Get Fucked Up” and Mojo Nixon’s “Tie My Pecker To My Leg”. I guess if anything, it proved that the four individuals comprising this band and the twisted people we attract are incapable of changing. But really, why would we want to? We are having the time of our lives playing rowdy music with great friends. Once we can wash the beer off the recordings we will be sure to post as much of our acoustic mayhem as the law will allow, without incriminating anyone. So, however you find yourself enjoying the change in the season, know that we are right there with you.

Hey everyone,

We are totally stoked to be hitting the road next week for a lead up to the amazing Instro Summit in Durham, NC! Along the way we are going to be hitting up some sweet spots such as Richmond, VA with some amazing friends The Trillions. A few more along the way including a hit on the coast in Wilmington, NC where we can hopefully jump in the ocean for a few, and Asheville, NC where maybe we can finally find Johnny Utah’s long lost cousin. We’ll close out the week with a night at the fabulous Instro Summit to enjoy some much needed camaraderie with our fellow surf musicians and music lovers.

Before that happens though, we are going into the studio to re-record our love song to Point Break, “The 50 Year Storm” plus a new tune and maybe some other stuff just for fun. The new recording will be rendered into an excitingly packaged 7″ record and should be available over the summer some time. We will be sure to keep everyone posted about the progress.

New News! 3/15/13

It’s 8:30 am, Friday. Any normal person should be either at work or on their way there. This is true for a lot of people in the U.S. It’s also true for us, because in just a couple hours, we along with Start Making Sense will be packed in a van, driving for 8+ hours on our way to Burlington VT. Eight hours of driving is a job all in itself, but there is no amount of driving that can take away from how GREAT it feels to be going back to Burlington! Tonight we will be in the showcase lounge at Higher Ground. A slight detour from our normal appearance on the stage at Nectar’s, but definitely something to be excited about. Also, we will be making our debut at the Putnam Den in Saratoga Springs NY Saturday night before we wrap up the weekend with a very late brunch at either the Country Inn in Accord NY or Keegan Ales in Kingston NY.

(Disclaimer: No trip on the road is complete without great breakfast, better brunch, and even better beer.)

Also! We just confirmed that on April 10th, we will be opening up for
The Reverend Horton Heat in our very own backyard at the Musikfest Cafe
at Steel Stacks in Bethlehem, PA!

Let’s start by saying I’m excited. Why am I excited? Well, that’s what I sat down at my computer to talk about. There are so many things happening in my world right now that it seems like the inspiration won’t stop coming. I am sifting through tons of footage from tour and composing interviews with key players from the GWC camp, and it’s starting to shape up into a watchable collection of images and sounds. We just had the incredible honor of making dinner for Big Shrimp and Lady Lamprey, aka Warchild and Utah’s parents, and from that dinner I suspect another batch of great footage for the documentary. I am writing a bunch of new songs and have started singing a lot in my car so get ready to hear some fresh beach rock in the next few months. I made the first episode of my podcast “The Magnificent Record Shelf” and am working on #2, so check that out. I am super super super excited to be doing our Point Break show in Brooklyn, if you haven’t had an opportunity to see us do this yet please do, we absolutely love this show and want to share that joy with everyone! It never seems like the excitement of playing this music ever fades and that is truly an amazing feeling. When I started playing surf songs many years ago by myself, I never thought that I would end up being able to share that love with so many people, but I have and for that I am grateful. Now I have to get back to work!

In 2011, Great White Caps set to work on reimagining the score to the greatest surf/spy/extreme sports/cop drama of all time; Point Break. Approaching this longtime dream project as if scoring the movie from scratch, led to a series of scripts with light and audio cues in an attempt to try and best capture the story on the screen and its relationship with the band on the stage. They landed on an extremely unique and new way to experience, not only a movie you love, but a band as well. The interplay between audio from the film, and live performance is a carefully choreographed dance.
The passion these four musicians feel for the film they dedicated so much time to, is easily seen, when you join the audience at one of these performances. Our long awaited sophomore release is here, and you guessed it, it’s available on vinyl! This album is very special to us for a lot of reasons, one of them being how perfectly it captures our growth as a band. We recorded “Screech Beach” live, all in one day, the way bands used to do it. Some albums take month after month of tracking and re-recording parts to get “the perfect sound,” but with all the shows we’ve been playing, we got it done in eight hours! So, with that said, we’re very excited for everyone to hear the new album, so we’ve made it available a dozen different ways. Currently it can be bought on vinyl, with a digital download card included, or you can download the album as MP3s online.
